Habitat/Microhabitat: Gregarious on a lawn by a Holly tree
Additional data: Fruiting body pyriforme, 2.5-4.5 cm across, 4-5.5 cm high, moist, velvety, spines very short giving surface a velvety to granular appearance, colored N 0.75 (Black), base more 7.5 YR 2/2 (No Ridgway Equivalent) to 10 YR 4/4 (Dresden Brown); CONTEXT white becoming 5 Y 8/4 (Colonial Buff) to 10 YR 5.5/4 (Tawny Olive), odor and taste mild, taking on a chambered appearance as spores mature, sterile base remaining white; PERIDIUM thick, about 0.5 mm; SPORES globose, roughened, about 4 µm; CAPILLITIUM thick walled, with much adhering material, no holes.
