Description: Uses: Leaf mashed with alcohol and put on forehead for headache; roots can be mashed and substituted for achiote (Anderson et al. 2003:127). For C. edulis: ornamental, en medicina como calmante [Standley, 1930, Anon, 1949, Souza N., 1942, Andrews, 1979]; cauterizante [Anon, 1949]; picaduras de araƱa [Standley, 1930, Anon, 1949, Osado R., 1834, Souza N., 1942, Andrews, 1979, Osado R., 1834]; para cicatrizar heridas (Arellano et al. 2003:100). For C. indica: Ornamental (Arellano et al. 2003:101). Food, ornamentation, medicinal (Balick et al. 2000:178). Common Names: Chan kala', chan k'ala', platanillo (Anderson et al. 2003:127, 200, 312). For C. edulis: Chank'ala', platanillo, Iengua de dragon [Barrera, 1976]; chan-kala, x-chankala, chaan k' ala' (Arellano et al. 2003: 100). Chancle (Chis), [Martinez, 1979] (Arellano et al. 2003:100). For C. indica: Chaan k'ala, platanillo (Arellano et al. 2003:101). Canna, huevo de gato, plantanillo, x'chi-qui-laba (Balick et al. 2000:178).
