Habitat/Microhabitat: growing on an old pile of coconut husks within 20 m of the shore. Caribbean coastal plan with cocao plantations, remnants of native wet forest vegetation and littoral vegetation.

Description: Uses: Medicinal, para tratar abscesos [Roys, 1931, Souza N., 1942]; hinchazón [Souza N., 1942] (Arellano et al. 2003:464). Used to heal sores, fruit cooked in ashes and applied to affected area (similar to Hymenocallis americana)(Kunow 2003:115). Sap used to cause abscesses to open (Roys 1931:237). Common names: Chiit, ch'itku'uk [Barrera, 1976]; chic-kuk, chinela, chit-cuuc, monjes, palma de ardilla [Martinez, 1979] (Arellano et al. 2003:463). Ch'it cuc (Kunow 2003:115). Chit-cuuc, chic-kuk ('squirrel flea') (Roys 1931:319).
