Description: Uses: Put round the head as counterirritant for headache and mal viento (Anderson et al. 2003:173). En medicina, las hojas como antiinflamatorio, dolores reumáticos, sífilis [Sonza N., 1942]; para dolor de cabeza,llagas [Martinez, 1969]; los frutos son forraje para pajaros (Arellano et al. 2003:591). Medicine, poison, ornamental, fiber (Balick et al. 2000:59). Leaves warmed and applied to cure body aches; leaves ground and drunk with water to cure stomach/bladder pains (Kunow 2003:138). Leaf juice applied to subborn ulcers and oral cankers; leaf infusion as remedy for pulmonary ailments and applied externally to treat skin diseases including dermatities caused by poison ivy; infusion of bark and stems and decoctoin taken as syphilis remedy; used to overcome chills and heacache, heal wouds and stanch bleeding; taken as hemostat when one is spitting blood or in cases of uterine hemorrhage or internal hemorrhoids; leaf decoction applied externally on hemorrhoids; fresh leaves or juice of parboiled leaves rubbed on parts affected by rheumatism or paralysis; fresh leaves bound to head to treat headache; rooots boiled with honey and taken to relieve stomachache and as a vermifuge (Morton 1981:155-156). Common names: Sak Sosojlaj2 (voucher). Lal, ortiga, ortiga de caballo, la'al, laal-tsimin [Barrera, 1976]; chak lalil ka' ax (Arellano et al. 2003:591). A-tzitzicaztli (Azteca), chichicastlillo (Oax), chilix (Totonaca, Pue), mala mujer (Mor), oncinapor, quemador (Sin), tachiuole (Dgo), tumali (Son), yet-le (Zapoteco, Oax), [Martinez, 1979] (Arellano et al. 2003:591).
